Kro! What’s that when it’s at home?
Kro is a Danish village pub. Obviously Manchester isn’t a Danish village but we hope our bar will have the qualities and comforts of a Kro; it’ll have good food, good beer and a warm welcome. The Ruby family, who run KRO, come from the West coast of Jutland in Denmark. The head of the family, Borge, trained to be a chef and then during his national service was the chef for the King of Denmark, on the Royal Yacht. He then came over to work in the London Hilton as the bars’ manager, which was followed by a time managing the Danish Food Centre, Cross Street, Manchester.

The Danish Food Centre was the first place that served real coffee in Manchester. They had the largest cold buffet table outside of Scandinavia, and they boasted a cafeteria, a bar, a retail shop, a first class restaurant as well as a take away service. Jytte Raff, another Dane and a close family friend, worked along side Borge to expand the Danish Food Centre, in the 1970s. She has since been developing her own very successful outside catering business. Jytte’s Kitchen is renowned throughout the Greater Manchester area, especially for her Danish open sandwiches and Speciality Cold Tables.

The Bars
In 1999 we opened Kro Bar in Manchester, a very popular cafe bar, for which it has won City Life, Bar of the Year 2000. Due to the success of Kro Bar we then opened a second restaurant-bar, Kro2, also in the city, which hosted the private bar for the athletes of the Commonwealth Games. Kro2 has also been acclaimed with the title, City Life, Bar of the Year 2002. Kro Piccadilly set in the heart of Manchester, on the lawns of Piccadilly, is our largest and busiest kro yet! A great place for a drink and something to eat. The perfect meeting place after shopping or to catch some live sports and good music! Not just the city center now!
Kro has opened in the suburbs of Heaton Moor, on the promiment corner of Heaton Moor and Shaw roads, with a private function room, Heaton Moor is perfect for all types of events from parties to product launches and seminars to wine tastings.

Outside Catering
Kro also has an outside catering business which is based at The Old Abbey Inn in the Science Park. Kro catering has taken over the clients from Jytte and are proud of its continuing growth in the city centre and around. For more details of our Catering business click here.
